Shining Force 3 was a Sega Saturn game released late 1997, but there were three separate scenarios which were sold separately. Scenario I and II take place at the same time but from different character perspectives, and Scenario III takes the series to it’s eventual conclusion.
A friend of mine lent me his copy of SF3 and I loved every minute of it, but I had no idea at the time that the story doesn’t actually finish in Scenario I. After finishing it I went looking for the other scenarios, only to learn that they were only ever released in Japanese and would never be released in English. This was actually what triggered my early interest in Japanese, I just really wanted to be able to play through and enjoy the rest of the game !!
Anyway here we are 20 years later, I read Japanese quite well now and wanted to read through the scripts online where I could use Rikaikun to lookup any words or phrases I didn’t already know. Unfortunately I couldn’t find much, the best I could find was this page in the web archive that had a lot of scripts for the first two scenarios and an incomplete set for the third.
So I made a little project to collect what I could from the wayback machine and put them on this site in a more readable form, that you can find here. I hope eventually to find the remaining scripts for Scenario III and put them here too, but for now I want to move onto some other things. I know there is the SF3 translation project, and I believe they get the Japanese text from the game binary itself. Maybe at some point I’ll put a script together to parse them out and include them here too.
