I want to keep uploading things here at least weekly to help maintain momentum, so here are some tanks that took no time at all to make:
I’ve almost finished watching this Udemy Houdini course which I’m enjoying, although it’s starting to feel a little dry. I’m probably going to take a little break with Houdini after this because honestly I haven’t got the hardware to make the most of it, so I think it can wait until I’ve got my new build.
Speaking of the new build, apparently rendering on Linux is some 20-40% faster than it is on Windows which suprised me quite a bit to find out. I figured Linux would probably be a bit better than Windows but probably only by a few % here and there, but these numbers are huge. As best as I can tell these slower speeds on Windows still happen today 3 years after that article was written as this thread implies.
A 20% increase just by running Linux is like being able to swap out a 3900X for a 5900X for free, so really it’d be irresponsible NOT to run Linux on the new build. I haven’t ran desktop Linux at home for a few years now so I’m really looking forward to getting back to it soon.
The graphics tablet I ordered arrived a few days back, and I’ll probably take that for a spin now to try and do some texture painting. I had a quick go at painting a piece of wood and failed miserably, so I’m going to be starting from the absolute basics because I need to learn the art fundamentals at the same time.
I haven’t given up on Blender yet and I still want to improve more. I watched a few videos on some of the simulations it can do and things like Mantaflow, but again I’m going to put these off until I’ve got more raw CPU/GPU power. I might try and do a car render soon, because I have this course ready to go, and it would be cool to render one first so I can compare afterwards the difference. I think I’ll learn more that way.
