I’m watching another Houdini course but it’s going to be a while before I have something new to upload from there, so because I want to keep up momentum uploading something every few days I decided I’d pick another short Blender tutorial where I could learn something new. In this case it was Dylan Neill’s Large Ocean Tutorial.
I knew Blender had an ocean modifier but I’d never used it before. The interesting part of this video is how to avoid the tiling affect on a large plane, which was solved through baking the ocean textures twice and then merging them together with a noise mask.
I actually tried to follow this tutorial before on my old PC but the scene requires more VRAM than I had. Rather than reduce the quality or render on the CPU I decided to put it off until I had my new build. I’m glad I did - this 150 frame animation took about an hour to render, and probably would have taken 20x longer rendering on my old i5-6600!
